Perfect English Cottage

For those of us who grew up reading The Wind in the Willows, The House on Pooh Corner and other classics of English literature, the cottage holds a special place in our hearts. Acclaimed writer Rose Byam Shaw looks at 18 quintessential examples from villages, seaside retreats and even large towns to show how to make any tight quarter liveable—complete with a comfy overstuffed chair perfect for enjoying your favorite book, of course!
Perfect English Cottage is such a treat, with plenty of lavish photos that take you inside cozy, romantic, well-loved homes. Peek inside a 1930s holiday getaway near an unspoilt stretch of coast (you can almost smell the crisp sea air), a collector‘s cabin where prized treasures take pride of place, even an airy hideaway where fresh-cut flowers from its carefully nurtured garden brighten every nook and cranny. You can also learn how to incorporate the beloved English cottage patterns, colors and furnishings into your own home (whether its beams are exposed, its roof is thatched and roses climb around its door—or not) with decorator's notes picking up on ideas and inspiration from the featured homes, plus a comprehensive directory of resources. Color photos.

My new favorite cottage book!
March 05, 2012

I have dozens of cottage books, and this is my new favorite! Beautifully written, photographed and formatted, it has the authenticity I've been looking for, rather than the staged designer "cottage" look that's so popular in the States. Like the creative people who occupy them, these humble homes, full of character, imperfection and experience, tell the stories of lives well-lived.

Lovely

I haven't enjoyed a book as much as I enjoyed this one in a long time. The pictures and writing were wonderful. We really don't have houses like these in the U.S., more's the pity.

A tad disappointing

To me, English Country is fresh, floral and fun, unfortunately many of the photographs seemed dowdy and lacking character. The book was meant to be a gift but I've hesitated in giving it.

Love it! Love it! Love it!

This beautiful book has the most satisfying pictures. It is photographed magnificently and offers a variety of styles, plus a feast of ideas. But what I really enjoyed was the prose that went with the pictures. Every cottage was interesting, every owner fascinating and the journey from beginning to completion of each cottage was inspiring. I've read more than my share of "cottage style" books, but this is by far my favorite. Beautiful job.

Real Cottage
May 08, 2010

Finally, a real life cottage book. Couldn't put it down. What a visual feast of cottages the way they are in real life...not staged, not planned, just how they evolve over time in real life. I loved the is book and will keep it close to look at again and again.
